10 FIGURE SKATING ESSENTIALS

Are you wondering whether you have all the figure skating essentials? If you’re just starting your journey in this sport and are unsure about what you’ll need, you are at the right place. We will cover all the basic essentials you will need.

Skates

Figure skates are a must-have because they provide the necessary ankle support needed for executing jumps, spins, and precise footwork and control. If you are buying your first pair of skates, you must get fitted by a professional. Purchasing your first pair of skates online almost guarantees that they will be the wrong size and/or lack the necessary support your ankles need.

Figure skates are boots with a pair of attached blades. Most beginner figure skates can be bought as a set with the blades already attached. As you progress in figure skating, you will need to start purchasing the boots and blades separately. There are different brands of boots and blades, allowing you to mix and match to create your preferred figure skates.

Skate Guards

Skate guards are a necessary accessory because they protect your blades when you are not on the ice. They usually prevent blades from getting dull or damaged, so it is important to always put on your skate guards immediately after getting off the ice. Most ice rinks have this sort of cushion that somewhat helps not damage the blades, but many people walk on it and leave small debris that will ruin your blades.

Towel

Microfiber towels are used to dry off your boots and blades after every skating session. This is necessary because excess moisture on the blades will lead to them rusting. Moreover, keeping the boots dry is crucial, as moisture can sometimes lead to mold growth, making it important to dry off both the boots and the blades for better performance and comfort.

Soakers

Soakers are soft covers that are made to go over your skates after a skating session. Before placing these covers over your blades, it is important to first wipe your blades off with a microfiber towel. Soakers serve the purpose of preventing rust from any remaining moisture that wasn’t wiped off by the towel. Soakers are needed for proper care of your skates by maintaining the blade sharpness and prolonging their lifespan. Additionally, they help prevent your skating bag and other equipment from getting wet.

Socks

Figure skaters typically wear thin socks to prevent friction between their feet and the skate boot. This also ensures that your skates fit snugly and properly, creating a better connection between you and the ice. Although you may think that thick socks are necessary for warmth, they are not recommended, as they can make it harder to have precise control over your footwork. Thin socks will provide a better feeling of the ice, which will help in executing jumps, spins, and footwork. When selecting socks, most nylon socks should be appropriate for figure skating.

Gloves

Gloves’ primary purpose is to keep your hands warm in an ice rink. Beyond warmth, they offer more benefits. Gloves provide a layer of protection by helping absorb some of the impact of falls. Different styles of gloves can be used such as fingerless or nylon gloves. Figure skating gloves also come in different styles such as having stones and designs.

Clothing

Flexible clothing is a must. Movement in figure skating requires clothing that will allow a wide range of motion. Clothing such as jeans will contract your movement and hinder your progress. Clothing that is marketed towards figure skaters provides the flexible material needed, but it also sometimes provides warmth.

Skate Sharpening

Getting your skates sharped regularly is important for better edge control and grip on the ice. There are various hollow cuts for figure skates. If you don’t specify your preference, the pro shop will give you the standard cut. You can consult with the skate sharpening specialist to determine your preferred hollow cut.

Water Bottle

Figure skating is a demanding sport, and staying hydrated is essential for excellent performance. Staying hydrated will not only give you an energy boost but will also enhance concentration for overall better performance on the ice.

Skate Laces

Maintaining an extra pair of laces is important. Ideally, you should be changing your laces every couple of months. We know that many figure skaters, including yourself, may not change their laces as often as recommended. However, having an extra pair of laces can be a lifesaver if your laces tear during a practice session. Additionally, if you frequently have to re-tie your skates because they no longer feel as snug, it is probably time to consider changing your laces.
